Howl’s Moving Castle

monstalove:

cachien:

So I finally got around to reading the book my favorite Studio Ghibli movie is based off of and let me just say the movie left out so much:

  • Spunky Howl and Sophie are literally sass personified
  • screaming mermaids
  • The Witch of the Wastes is actually depicted as pretty hot
  • “That’s better. Some of you are pretending to notice me at last.”
  • Martha Hatter’s existence
  • Mrs. Fairfax’s garden and warm summer honey vibes
  • Sophie Bullies Fire Demons & Wizards Hatter
  • “Look at it! It’s ginger! I shall have to hide until it’s grown out! Despair! Anguish! Horror!”
  • The whole route of Sophie’s self-discovery
  • About 800% more witchcraft
  • Magic pouring from the seams of the book
  • Cool-hued Calcifer and his constant complaints of people dripping on him

Honestly, if you haven’t read it, read it.

In the case of this story, it’s not about whether the book or the movie is better. It’s about Diana Wynne Jones and Hayao Miyazaki developed the same concept into equally magical and beautiful stories. And we’re the lucky ones who get the same magic in prose and film.

There is an audio book on YouTube pls check it out i haven’t finished it completely but it’s honestly so lovely and I love every second of listening to it so far :)

“Not just beautiful, though — the stars are like the trees in the forest, alive and breathing. And they’re watching me. What I’ve up till now, what I’m going to do — they know it all. Nothing gets past their watchful eyes. As I sit there under the shining night sky, again a violent fear takes hold of me. My heart’s pounding a mile a minute, and I can barely breathe. All these millions of stars looking down on me, and I’ve never given them more than a passing thought before. Not just the stars — how many other things haven’t I noticed in the world, things I know nothing about? I suddenly feel helpless, completely powerless. And I know I’ll never outrun that awful feeling.”

on my first date with happiness,
i decided i had enough of
oversized black tshirts and loose black jeans
so i threw on a yellow sundress,
which i found after passing through my closet
like a raging hurricane;
as always, i was running late.

on my first date with happiness,
i decided i was going to let her
fall in love with my natural self
so i put down my concealer, mascara, lipstick and eyeliner.
and i ornament myself with rings and necklaces,
a spray of flowery, sweet perfume.

on my first date with happiness,
i decided i was going to let her in
so i told her my everything,
i was afraid, of course but
i knew i would have to, at least,
give her a chance
to get to know me,
i would have to give my tired self a chance
to stop being a fucking liar.

on my first date with happiness,
i said:
“hey, my name is sadness. but
i want to learn to be happy again.”

on my first date with happiness,
i let a little bit of life
reach my insides
after a whole long time
of having myself
against myself.

on my first date with happiness.
